Complete: gemini://gemini.onedimension.net

This month I built a gemini capsule mirroring all the pages I’ve created for onedimension.net.

Building something for this space was quite an unusual experience. There’s a lot about websites we take for granted, but these constants that don’t hold true in geminispace. There’s no such thing as styling, or javascript. This means the core building blocks of a gemini capsule are just text and links. It makes thinking about what a page should be a different sort of experience; the information architecture takes precedence since there’s really nothing else that needs to be considered.

It’s clear geminispace is in its early days. There’s something like 1200 unique capsules, which is truly microscopic in comparison to HTTP space. But that’s what makes it so great—searching for pages on geminispace.info yields just a few results, all of them handmade pages by individuals. It makes the internet feel very…authentic. Nobody’s out trying to make money, nobody’s out to accost your attention. The protocol is designed so that’ll never happen. Everything has a similar kind of feel to it, an authenticity hard to find on the modern web. It’s quiet, it’s respectful.

(FL doesn’t support gemini links, hah)
