There's lots to consider when it comes to non-verbal communication for the chat interface. There are two primary affordances I'm interested in that many messaging applications have implemented:
- Typing indicators/ellipses
- Emoji reactions
The goal is to drill down to what's essential here; what are the primary drivers that resulted in these design choices? What is it about people and their communication that makes these non-verbal cues effective?
My intuition is that the immediate answer is really obvious and the real answer is not really understandable. Though perhaps in both cases the implications are the same, we shall see.
