Brutalist Phone

An awful brainstorm session in some deep bar in Ottawa back in the winter. Not studying the stars, but the likelihood of a brutalist phone.

we need inconvenience like this again. yes I'll come to the meeting but I am NOT bringing my computer UNLESS you would like to hire a moving company.

So that is the story of the brutalist phone. The Light Phone is the product most aligned with the vision of the Brutalist Phone but shares none of the extremely (and purposely) inconvenient features.

The CLOSEST thing to the vision would need to be The Light Phone, who have made some pretty killer products with only the basics in mind. thelightphone.com

But few in this modern day an age could really survive or excel without access, and the demand for 18" thick concrete phones that weigh 45kgs doesn't seem to be there, so the project has been put on hold.

The expectation to be "always on" or accessable is more of a burden than a luxury. It interrupts flow, heightens accountability no one asked for, and if a request is not immediately answered, animosity starts to stir.

Beyond the fact that it's clearly unusable before purchase, and a burden to carry around, is it much different than the devices we carry now? Yes they're lightweight and provide us access to the world, but there is probably a better way to go about this.

Which takes me back to my earlier point, a dolly would need to be included in every purchase to move the phone. This inconvenience is perhaps another feature.

We did hit a wall when deciding to make the phone 18 inches thick but instead of iterating, we decided to proceed with the thick phone. But at the dimensions we were talking about, the phone would have to weigh 45kgs.

But what if there was a better way? What if the phone was purchased already useless in the conventional sense of a phone. That question was what led us to remove all electricity/ capability for apps/ music / messaging. Really going back to basics.

Another mood board item.

Here are some items we had placed on the mood board. The concept was a "bricked" phone, one that became useless after purchase, and after use.

Right off the bat, the intention was to hook people in with the promise of a free dolly.

Thankfully we were at least able to move off paper. I say JUSTICE for the Brutalist phone.

We concluded it was not possible.
